Understanding the Symptoms of Celiac Disease

When we hear ‘Celiac disease’, most think symptoms related to the disease are gut related, such as stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting and bloating. Many, however, don’t realize that symptoms of Celiac disease are beyond the gut (this year’s theme of the Canadian Celiac Association for Celiac Awareness Month). Celiac disease is more than a digestive disease and it’s important for people to understand what the lesser-known symptoms are.

Just as a reminder, or for those who don’t know, Celiac disease – in short – is an autoimmune disease that is caused by gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley and rye).  Gluten is to bread, as lactose is to milk.

The Canadian Celiac Association has put together a great infographic (as seen below) to explain some of the top atypical symptoms of Celiac Disease. To learn more about each symptom, visit their website here: https://www.celiac.ca/awareness-month/atypical-symptoms/
